Tariffs Are Making Things More Expensive in Alaska

Alaska already has some of the highest costs of living in the country, and recent political decisions are causing those costs to increase. These cost increases affect Alaskans, all across the state, no matter your age or income. It is important that all Alaskans understand how policy decisions in DC are impacting our lives here at home.

The Cause

Alaska is uniquely vulnerable to tariffs. There aren’t many farms or factories, and we have to either cross into Canada or go via barge, boat, or plane to raise the lower-48. That means everything we rely on in our day-to-day lives depends on keeping the costs of imports down. Tariffs are meant to do the opposite, to make trade, and with it, our lives more expensive. Tariffs hurt fisheries, oil & gas, mining, and small businesses. But they hurt regular Alaskans most of all. We see this from the small things like coffee to the big things like housing prices. See the raw numbers for yourself:

The Impact

Category Average cost increase (2025)
Grocery costs +$638
Housing costs +$480
Gas and car repairs +$587
Electricity bill +$360
1lb of coffee +$2.30
New laptop +$150
Pair of boots +$25
